Contemporary garage in Brisbane.

A former summer camp, this site came with a unique set of challenges. An existing 1200 square foot cabin was perched on the shore of Thorndike Pond, well within the current required setbacks. Three additional outbuildings were part of the property, each of them small and non-conforming. By limiting reconstruction to the existing footprints we were able to gain planning consent to rebuild each structure. A full second story added much needed space to the main house. Two of the outbuildings have been rebuilt to accommodate guests, maintaining the spirit of the original camp. Black stained exteriors help the buildings blend into the landscape. This is an example of an industrial attached two-car garage in Seattle.

A full kitchen redesign in Norwood Junction, taking a kitchen that previously lacked enough storage to create a stylish and functional space that my clients want to cook and spend time in. The brief was to create a kitchen with dark tones and plenty of wood, and I designed this with black fenix and oak veneer doors, coupled with splashback and floor tiles for texture. Here the layout was dramatically changed, adding in floor to ceiling cabinetry, open shelving, a breakfast cupboard and opening up the window by removing the sink and dishwasher that were previously here. Inspiration for a country shed and granny flat in Essex.

The high point of this project was the smart layout and design that made sure to get every inch of space allowed by Avondale Estate’s unique height, size and massing limits. In addition, the exterior used a variety of materials to create a harmonious and interesting visual that though unique is oh so pleasing to the eye. Details inside made the space useful, airy and bright. A very large sliding door unit floods the living room and kitchenette with light. The bathroom serves all purposes and doesn’t feel too tight. And the office has plenty of room for visiting clients and long term can provide a bedroom with plenty of closet space if needs change. The accessory structure successfully includes absolutely every function the homeowner could want with style to spare.

The original concept for this space came from the idea that this modern glass greenhouse would be built around an old wooden shed still standing beneath the trees. The "shed" turned Powder Room would of course be new construction, but clever materiality - white washed reclaimed vertical panelling - would make it appear as though it was a treasure from many years before.
