Why Greendale seafood is best

At Greendale we’re only interested in selling the best to our customers. Because we have our own fishing fleet, we can supply our fish counter with regular fresh catches that can be traced directly back to the sea. Operating in accordance with the Seafood Responsible Fishing Scheme, our boats work out of Exmouth, Brixham and Newlyn, and catch a variety of fish from Westcountry waters; a catch can often be on its way to the Greendale farm shop in Exeter within hours of leaving the sea. If we can’t catch it ourselves, we source only from trusted suppliers with standards as high as our own, and we take great pride in ensuring that a delicious variety is always to be found on our fish counter.

White Fish Sharwarma With Quick Onion Pickle

White Fish Sharwarma With Quick Onion Pickle

Make a real meal of it with healthy white fish marinaded in shawarma spices and served in your own home-made flatbreads with a quick home-made pickle (we’ve used pollock, but hake or any other firm-fleshed white fish will work equally well). You might get a little bit messy when you eat them, but that’s definitely part of the charm! Can be cooked on the hob or over a BBQ. Serves 4.

Fresh Mackerel and New Potato Salad Recipe

Fresh Mackerel and New Potato Salad Recipe

Eating seasonally doesn’t mean limiting your diet to a few dull recipes, as this delicious dish attests. Mackerel and new potatoes are plentiful in the UK in spring; they work beautifully together in this light but satisfying salad.

Fresh Fish

Responsibly Caught

We continuously work towards improving the sustainability of our catch, and lessening the impact fishing operations can have on the marine environment. All our boats operate under strict fishing quotas, designed to prevent overfishing in UK waters, and we have modified the engine of each vessel to minimise carbon emissions. Having achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainability accreditation for our Cornish hake catch, we’re seeking MSC accreditation for a further three fisheries. We also follow the Seafood Responsible Fishing Scheme, to ensure high standards of management, maintenance, crew safety and wellbeing on board our boats. To learn more, click here.

Food Waste

Nothing Gets Wasted

We hate waste! We try to ensure our fish reaches customers in as fresh a state as possible, either from our fish counter or online (fresh fish is delivered via an overnight service). Our skilled fishmongers never discard quality fish if they can help it - filleting offcuts are used in our ready-made fish pies, fish pie mixes and fish cakes, while empty crab and lobster shells are used to make our bisque and fish stock. Any remaining fish waste is collected from us by Advanced Proteins, which processes animal waste into bio-fuel and key pet-food ingredients.

Supporting

Fishing for litter

Greendale supports Fishing for Litter (FFL), a brilliant environmental project. FFL aims to reduce marine litter by involving key stakeholders – namely the fishing industry – in actively collecting and removing the rubbish gathered in their nets during normal fishing activities, including plastics, ghost gear, textiles and other debris. FFL provides vessels with bags to store this rubbish in while at sea, and places skips and bins in ports to receive the rubbish when the vessel returns to land.
